IGNITION TIMING

CONTACT BREAKER POINTS:

1. Remove the cover.

2. Open the points (1) with your finger and examine. Pitted or burned points should be replaced and condensers checked. grey discoloration can be cleaned with a point file.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and check each point gap at its maximum. The standard gap is 0.3 - 0.4mm (0.012 - 0.016 in.).

To adjust the gap, loosen the locking screws (2) and move the breaker point plate. When properly adjusted, retighten locking screws.

IGNITION TIMING:

Do not perform this operation until point gaps have been adjusted.

1. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the "F" mark (2) of 1.4 cylinder (3) to the index mark (1). At this time, the contact breaker points (4) should just start to open. To determine accurately the exact moment of points opening, a test lamp should be connected across the 1.4 cylinder breaker points (4).

2. Adjustment is made by loosening the base plate locking screws (6) and carefully rotating the base plate (5) until the test lamp flickers.

NOTE: Rotating the base plate clockwise will retard the ignition timing, and vice versa.

3. Next connect the test lamp to 2.3 cylinder breaker points (9). Rotate the crankshaft 180° (1/2 turn) clockwise and align the "F" (2.3 cylinder) mark to the index mark (1). Check and adjust in the same manner as explained in step "2".

4. Recheck the point gaps and ignition timing.
